A Brief History
The Arc of Tempe, a non-profit Arizona corporation, was started in 1964 as a support group for parents and is a part of The Arc of the United States (formerly the Association for Retarded Citizens). Prior to the mandating of special education and the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, The Arc of Tempe successfully launched a pre-school program for mentally challenged children. Later, a day care program was established for severely handicapped children. These programs are now operated by TCH, whose CEO (Dave Cutty) was a former Arc of Tempe staff member.
In 1981, The Arc of Tempe started a recreation program for adults and teens with developmental disabilities. The recreation program focuses on the following key areas: life skills, social interaction, leisure learning and community involvement.
The recreation program is supported through participant fees, donations, fund-raisers and profits from The Arc of Tempe Thrift Store operated at Mill & Southern in Tempe.
